The redesign of Adria Alpina wasn't about reinventing a successful product, but refining it. By rethinking familiar interior solutions through the lens of everyday living, we created a caravan that supports daily routines, feels more like home and unmistakably premium while preserving the timeless character that defines Alpina.

  • Sustainability is a core value at Intra Lighting, but often takes a back seat to quality, modularity, and culture, relying on individual employees. Efforts lacked consistent management and communication. Our collaboration sought to create a comprehensive sustainability strategy, with workshops producing valuable content for future solutions.

The Challenge

Evolving an established flagship: Designing for an established flagship is different from designing a completely new product. Existing customers expect continuity, while new buyers expect meaningful improvements.

Learning from existing owners: Combining our years of experience with caravan users with Adria’s own research involving 74 existing Alpina owners gave us a clear picture of where the product was already strong and where it needed to evolve. Four areas emerged as priorities: sleeping, seating, kitchen and storage.

A considered approach to materials: Many materials used in caravans are selected to meet specific requirements for weight, durability and production. The challenge is creating a premium material experience through thoughtful combinations, finishes, surface treatments and detailing.

Designing for longevity: Every finish that looks good in the showroom also needs to age gracefully through years of UV exposure, rain, road debris and travel.

Our Approach

Our approach was guided by a simple principle: premium is experienced through everyday use.

We looked at how people actually live inside the caravan and identified opportunities to make daily routines feel more natural, comfortable and enjoyable.

One of the key findings was an unmet need for additional wardrobe storage at the entrance, similar to what you would expect at home: a place to put away outerwear, shoes and the small items you carry in your pockets. The solution needed to provide useful storage without becoming bulky or visually disrupting the space. A mirror on the living-room side helps the new storage area recede into the interior, reflecting natural light and making the space feel larger.

At this early stage, we used full-scale cardboard mock-ups to test spatial ideas quickly. This allowed us to iterate efficiently, compare different configurations and understand how each solution affected storage, circulation and the perception of space before committing to a final direction.

Building on the insights around sleeping and seating, we developed a rotating side seat with adjustable back support that transitions effortlessly between multiple configurations. Upright, it provides a supportive dining seat; reclined, it creates a more relaxed position for lounging. Rotated 90 degrees with the backrest lowered, it becomes an extended leg rest for reading or watching television. The same mechanism also simplifies the conversion of the sofa into a bed, making the transition quicker and less cumbersome in everyday use.

The kitchen was reconfigured to feel more like a domestic kitchen, with contemporary material combinations, an improved workflow and an integrated organisation rail that turns a previously underdefined corner into practical everyday storage.

In the bathroom, replacing the mirrored cabinet above the sink with a flush mirror created a cleaner, more spacious atmosphere while improving everyday use. The additional headroom allows people to move more naturally around the sink, even during simple routines like leaning forward to brush their teeth.

Material choices further reinforced the feeling of home. Warmer flooring, carefully balanced colours and restrained detailing bring the different spaces together into an interior that feels calm, residential and timeless.

Every improvement was carefully balanced against the caravan's weight targets, ensuring that the enhanced living experience didn't come at the expense of usable payload.

The exterior was refined with the same attention to purposeful detail. New aerodynamic elements such as an integrated rear spoiler and dedicated wheel covers were introduced alongside a silver body finish, dark lighting elements, chrome detailing and minimalist branding. Together, these changes gave Alpina a more distinctive premium identity while improving aerodynamic performance.

Outcomes

The redesigned Alpina demonstrates that meaningful innovation doesn't have to be radical. By focusing on how people actually live inside the caravan, the project introduced a series of carefully considered improvements that collectively transform the experience of using the product.

The result is an interior that feels more like home, while strengthening Alpina's position as Adria Mobil's premium conventional caravan.

The redesign expresses luxury through home-reminiscent materials, comfort, usability and thoughtful attention to everyday life. Several of the solutions introduced in Alpina were industry firsts, developed from our long-term research into onboard living rather than styling trends.
