The Challenge

Della Spina is a Slovenian producer and reseller of prescription and sunglasses. Their brand is built around affordability of eyewear; they provide quality glasses at an attainable price while giving clients an option to select from a wide range of shape and colour variations. What started as a small business is now growing and expanding to multiple shop locations, creating a need for an unified and adaptable interior solution.

Our objective was to develop a flexible furniture system and spatial layout that could adapt to the diverse characteristics of future retail spaces, enabling Della Spina to expand without the need for custom architectural solutions. As with all business touchpoints, the interior had to clearly communicate the Della Spina brand. This meant the final solution needed to be function-focused, honest, and almost utilitarian, encapsulating the core values while also capturing the company's unique, playful, and approachable character.

Our Approach

Retail space serves a dual purpose: it is essential for customer experience, supporting the selection process with clarity and accessibility, while also serving as a workspace that streamlines employee operations.

We began by evaluating Della Spina’s existing interior from the customer’s perspective and conducted a co-creative workshop with employees. This collaborative session helped us gather insights on creating an optimal work environment and understanding customer behaviour patterns.

The Outcomes

Findings from our research guided the creation of a scalable furniture system and functional zones that adapt to various store layouts. The focal point of the new interior is the zig-zag display rack, which addresses the project’s main challenge: clearly presenting a wide range of products while adapting to changing inventory.

This display system allows customers to browse options independently and at their own pace, minimising the need for staff assistance when trying on and returning glasses to the display. Consequently, employees can devote more time to customers who need personalised help. The design’s simplicity, functionality, and playful aesthetics reflect Della Spina’s identity, making the shelf display a distinctive and memorable brand element.

Sales counters and work desks were designed to enhance client-seller interaction and optimise service delivery. Drawing from workshop insights, we created workstations that provide access to the right tools at crucial moments, with storage spaces tailored to each phase of the purchase journey. This ensures employees have everything they need to offer efficient and personalised service while keeping work surfaces tidy.
